After the release of "Songs from a Window", Resting Rooster began experimenting with new sonic textures and a bigger, full-band sound. These home recordings demonstrate the transistion between the minimalism of "Songs from a Window" and the extravagance of "Morning Said". Engineered by Cyrus Resur. Helped by some extra guests, the threesome of Cyrus Resur and Joseph and David Bower (the latter being the songwriter of the group) create almost fragmentary songs that quickly and carefully call up strange, unsettling images and sounds -- it\'s almost like being in a strange, centuries-old dream that keeps jolting the dreamer awake. It\'s not that Songs from a Window is all meditation by any means -- the opening track, named after the band, is pure riff feedback and noise, while the concluding "Insect Mass" is a fairly full instrumental jam. But in between things are often more skeletal, and while songs do suggest antecedents -- "Birds Never Leave" is clearly an homage to pre-glam David Bowie at his most squealing and strange -- more often it\'s a strange, hard to place blend. "Wild Across" packs in Morricone-touched guitar arrangements into its burnt acid folk style, while "Smell of Ghosts" feels like a consciously old-time homage to a campy horror movie in its jauntily creepy fashion. Other songs are more recognizably acid/freak folk as such, such as the pretty enough "Dolay with Love" and "The Silent Partner," but the occasional sense of murky, hard to trace sonic depths, as on "My Manatee" and "Not Enough," keeps things intriguing.   -- Allmusic.com

"The Tapes" was a songwriting experiment. After the end of the pop group The Vegetables, and a fully costumed and choreographed rock opera entitled "Shiva, Beelzebub, Free Love, and the End of Human Life on Mars", and a few other various rebound attempts I decided that for my next trick, with the help of Joe and Cyrus, I would write and record an album in three days. I wrote the words and melodies in my head during the day and got together with they guys in the evening to lay them down on what turned out to be a somewhat broken cassette four track. These sessions ultimately resulted in the formation of the band RESTING ROOSTER.
