Indianapolis, 1999 through 2006 and 2010-
Lunar Event played their first show in their hometown of Indianapolis in October of 2000. The band was started by Derek Osgood with Gwynneth Reitz joining soon thereafter. They got signed to record labels, recorded EPs and full-lengths, added and subtracted members, and toured for over six years. Their approach to indie electronic music was a little before its time, or after its time depending on how you look at it.
Gwynneth left the band in 2006. The remaining members of Lunar Event, Jonathan Harmon, Drew Reed, and Mike Contreras changed the name of the group to Red Light Driver. Their new sound was very different than that of Lunar Event’s. LE (for short) was no more, and remained dormant inside Derek’s head for five years.
In 2011 Derek began writing demos for new Lunar Event material and played a one-off reunion show with Reitz and most of the original members. In February of 2012, Lunar Event was reborn with its first single since 2005. The single was called “Escargot” and was released digitally to iTunes, Amazon and other online retailers.
No one knows, including Derek, where Lunar Event will go from here. He has plans to release a new full-length in 2013, but has no plans to put a band together and tour. That’s all subject to change depending on the reception of the new record.
