With one spooky holiday (Halloween) behind us and another spooky holiday (election day) coming in the very near future, I'm feeling pretty out of sorts, to be honest. Maybe another chunk of a playlist will help? It'll act like a salve against the constant scrape of the universe. Let's kick it off with something seeping in from 1990s Indianapolis in the form of Puppet. That should do the trick. "Boil" saunters in all fuzzy and chunky, kick drum rattling the cage.
Of course, there's plenty of new in the playlist too. My personal favorite is from the sweet little pop outfit of Greg Adams' Cozy Catastrophes. Adams usually opts for a more lush sound, but "Dying Breath" comes from a compilation of his early 4-track work, and, to my ears, the simplicity suits him.
The playlist closes on Wringer. I played a fun show with them back in 2013 or so I think. It was at Rachael's in Bloomington (rest in peace, beleaguered venue). We had a good time with the lights all up high and I was whistling melodies I stole from the band for the days following. Pop punk bands are a gift, friends, and we ought to be grateful.
Stay tuned next week for another playlist, supported as ever by Smallbox.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
