Celebrate Halloween and ‘Stranger Things’ at American Dream Hi-Fi

'Stranger Things' on Netflix

The Netflix TV show Stranger Things has become a cultural phenomenon for various reasons, including the references to Stephen King and Amblin era horror/sci-fi adventures as well as its relatable cast. Another reason why Stranger Things has connected with so many people is its Carpenter-esque synth heavy soundtrack. The score for the show was created by Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon of the electronic group Survive. The soundtrack is being released on vinyl this Friday, and to celebrate, Kokomo’s unique record store American Dream Hi-Fi will be having a costume/dance party.

American Dream Hi-Fi is a place I keep recommending. The place where you can browse old and new vinyl while sipping a beer or eating a school pizza. The events that take place at this mecca are always just as interesting as the place itself. According to the Facebook event page, the Stranger Things costume/dance party will include Christmas lights, Eggos, and Dungeons and Dragons. There will also be a costume contest with a $50 store credit for first prize and a copy of the Stranger Things soundtrack for second place.

Inside American Dream Hi-Fi

Other stores (like Indy CD & Vinyl) will be holding listening parties for the soundtrack, but I thought it was interesting how American Dream Hi-Fi decided to go all out with the festivities. If you’re looking for a Halloween party with a theme and you’re already a fan of Stranger Things, then this is one costume party you won’t want to miss. Though I’m an odd man out and haven’t finished the series yet, it’s undeniable that this sounds like a fun time for any record lover. Hey, or if you like having fun. You don’t hate fun do you?

I asked owner Mike Wilson some questions about the costume party and all about horror records in general.

Greg Lindberg: How did the idea of having a Stranger Things themed party come about?

Mike Wilson: I wanted to do some sort of Halloween party at the store. Just so happened the Stranger Things LP (which everyone is blowing their lid off about) is being released Oct. 28. I was in the planning stages when Sony Red reached out to us/every store in the world with the idea of a themed party as well. So…bam! Eggos for all.

GL: What do you think it is about the Stranger Things soundtrack that captivated so many people?

MW: I noticed about a year ago my own taste for the John Carpenter/‘80s style horror movie synth sound started to rise. You're seeing a lot of that now. Whether it's Stranger Things, the Twin Peaks re-boot…hell even the recent X-Files thing. Retro spooky synth sounds/visuals have always been cool, but it seems like a lot of people happen to be grabbing onto them currently, which is great.

GL: Are there other albums that you’d recommend to customers who enjoy that soundtrack?

MW: For sure. Look into both the labels Waxwork and Death Waltz/Mondo and prepare to lose all of you money. The group that created the theme song (S U R V I V E) is great. Anything John Carpenter. There is a band that blends ‘80s horror and doom metal named Zombi that is great. Slasher Dave is a favorite of mine, as well as Voyag3r. They can be found on Michigan's Bellyache Records.

GL: The store definitely shares a love of horror movies (with many horror DVDs for sale). What is your relationship with the horror/suspense genre? Do you think horror and records mix well in a way?

MW: I offer the horror (especially rare or "B" horror) here as another way to provide a unique shopping experience. In a small town like ours, we might be the only place to get these kind of titles. I also just dig it.

GL: Do you plan on dressing up in costume for the party? Can you say what Stranger Things related costume you’ll have or other ideas for ones?

MW: I have a shaved head. My girlfriend has a pink dress and jean jacket. So "Eleven" would be easy. Maybe too easy though. To quote Donald Trump, "I'll leave you in suspense."
