MFT’s First Friday shows have been the best way to see a showcase of some of the newest and most diverse artists that Indiana has to offer. This Friday is no exception with a trio of groups that bring timeless tunes on time. Though The Pills, PARTS and Hales Corner sound like they come from a different time, they are all like Morris Day. With the time.
The Pills are a band with members from both Nashville and Bloomington, and they have a unique lo-fi psych sound that will make you feel like you’ve taken some pills. Pills that will send you to another place and time. Their album Take Your Pills is available to stream on Bandcamp, and you can also purchase a silver cassette of the album. With spacey vocals and gentle '60s riffs, you’ll sway your hips and bite your lips. If you’re looking for some upbeat grooves, The Pills got your remedy, and, hey, these pills are okay to overdose on (not recommended).
Why is such a great sound coming out of Bloomington right now? Has anyone checked the water, or lack thereof, lately? I’m not going to complain, but The Pills bring that special iconic sound with an additional psychedelic helping. Not many bands with a similar penchant for catching three-and-a-half minutes tunes are willing to go past nine minutes. The Pills do, and they do it especially well on “Only Children,” which divides the spectrum of gravitating pop jams.
MFT First Friday is also excited to welcome PARTS from Grand Rapids, Mich. PARTS are like a mix of Young Ejecta and M83, and their dreamy synth-pop has been praised by Gorilla vs. Bear, where you can also check out their three-track self-titled EP. The duo is made up of Alyssa Midcalf and Marley Ferguson, who both alternate between lead and background vocals. The EP was recently released digitally on Winspear.
If you like your synths extra synthy (picture the sloppy joe scene from Billy Madison but with synths instead of sloppy joes) then you’ll dig the melodic and slippery jingles on “Play Fair,” which hit oh so nicely with that drum beat. You’ll definitely want to check out PARTS now, because I have a good feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the future.
The third group on this bill is Hales Corner from Indianapolis, and they just released a new album on Darling Records which contains so many gems you’d think Sonic the Hedgehog might be involved in a scheme to steal all of those gems. This sunshine rock might also get that hedgehog to chill out a little. Check out the peaceful builds on Garden View, and you can also purchase the album on chrome cassettes.
Damn Gina! This is not a show to miss. Oh yeah, didn’t I mention that this is a name your own price show? But, let’s be real, you shouldn’t be Shanaynay and take advantage of that generosity. $5 is suggested, and that’s a steal. Don’t you want to feel like you’ve stolen something? Let MFT steal your heart this Friday, and don’t complain when your heart is missing, okay? See ya there, dinguses!
