I've got fond, fond memories of helping to put together Culture Shock during my time at WIUX down in Bloomington. Buying way too much Vitamin Water because of a band's rider, rolling around in the grass in Dunn Meadow, getting yelled at by the manager of some up-and-coming indie rock hit factory, it's all looking super gauzy as I put this playlist together. But most of all I remember the great music I heard. The Coke Dares set I saw in 2008 (I think?) knocked me upside the head so hard, that even years later I decided to track down on of the members and talk to him about it (it was Jason Groth, read my interview with him here). And my boys in Weakness popping off in 2011 still give me dreams that I almost but not quite want to call nightmares.
This year's Culture Shock is happening this Saturday, April 9th, in Dunn Meadow down in Bloomington. In addition to the local acts (three of which are featured as the first three tracks on this playlist), the festival will be headlined by Neon Indian and Whitney. It's free and it's a great way to get in touch with what's happening in certain pockets down in Bloomington. Get all the info you need here, and dive in to the playlist up top featuring both current and past Culture Shock performers.
You'll see us posted up down there with a booth, so be sure to say hello!
