Sir Deja Doog starts off this week, curling his voice around a smoky melody, announcing in the chillest way possible that he has triumphantly returned. I've got strong, strong memories of walking around a warm Indianapolis listening to Love Coffins back when it came out in 2014, and with a sunny day crackling around me as I write this, Doog has taken me right back. Vibe with me, and please take a bit of your day to dig back into Rob Peoni's great interview with him from a while back; it's worth every second.
Right out of that we slide into the easy swagger of John Strohm's "Eva Braun," and then into a newly added recording from Absonites (care of Dave Jablonski). Remember when Absonites contribute to our IN Covers series? Good, it would be a shame if you forgot.
Every single time I make one of these playlists, I'm excited by how easy it is for me to keep on finding bands I have somehow missed all this time. This week it's Musical Suicide. Sometimes I get sad that there's not more blistering hardcore in my life. Musical Suicide made me a little less sad. We could all use a little more blistering hardcore, to be honest.
It's a slick, rapid come down from that Musical Suicide track into the cinematic instrumental from Zach Smith, but that's just how I like it. Smith's profusions of melodies and kitchen-sink soundoffs set you up for Ben Justus and his Trespassing buds to bounce you right out of here and into the afternoon. It all feels very perfect.
Thanks to Smallbox for making these weekly playlists possible!
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
