This week's playlist is a sandwich and the bread is my boy Louie Louie burning through two tracks by the classic Indiana funk band The Highlighters (NUVO's Kyle Long put their "Funky 16 Corners" on his list of 45 essential Indiana 45"s so you know they're good). The covers--and there's even a third one I didn't include--are part of our ongoing IN Covers series, which you can hear more of right here, and read all about over here.
The rest of the playlist is about half new additions to the archive and half old favorites. Smooth White are so glammy I don't know what to do with them, tossing off tributes to Roxy Music, David Bowie, T. Rex, and all those pals without even so much as realizing it or breaking a sweat. The glam tower tumbles into the low roil of Mutzchler, Stewart & Monds, whose squeaky intro lead tones almost evoke some kind of Shepard tone--always climbing, climbing, climbing, but perpetually tromping through the mud, too.
I've got one of the best memories of my life packed in dryer sheets and wrapped around the Rutabega: I saw them open for Bottomless Pit in Chicago with some of my best buds and I had never heard of them before and I was skeptical and I was blown away by how huge two people with just a voice, a telecaster, and a drum kit could sound. "Come Back Big Brother" sends me on a personal history tailspin every time I hear it.
This playlist, as ever, is brought to you with help from the kind folks at Smallbox.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
