I feel like I've said it 70 times now in 70 slightly different ways, so I'm starting to feel a little self-conscious. But whatever, it's true: the MFT archive has an insane swath of Indiana music, one that continues to surprise me every time I return to it. I probably shouldn't assume, but I feel like there's a strong possibility that I'm one of the people on this earth who has looked at our alphabetical listing of bands the most (what with these weekly playlists), and yet, almost every time I return to the well, I manage to find something I haven't checked out, looked at, or even noticed before. It's great.
For example, that slice of Bloomington music history in the live recording of a set they played back in the summer of 1988. It has so far never even crossed my radar, and now there's not only this recording, but also a mysterious cassette out there in the ether that Dale Lawrence apparently doesn't want put online (peep the comments on their MFT page). This is the sort spiraling musical tendril revelation that I love and that MFT provides on the weekly for me.
Then there's DM Stith, a face and sound I know, but one I haven't thought of since I lived in Bloomington. What a nice reminder, especially in the form of this track "Pigs," which features the inimitable Jefferson Street Parade Band. It's all glee all the way down.
Thanks to Smallbox for helping to make these playlists possible every week!
