Just going to go ahead and pop in on a Friday--admittedly running behind--to let you know about how you might've missed the low-end sludge popping of The Absonites making a brand new entrant into our growing IN Covers series. Check the embed below if you don't believe me that it's real.
The cover starts off impressionistic, with tape wobble and feedback. "Will this cohere?" you wonder for a moment, right before, yes, it coheres. From there it drifts inward like heavy fog, filling out bass frequencies with a messed-up organ chug, and then emptying everything all over again to make space for the vocals. I want to talk endlessly about how heavy this feels, how powerful the bass is in its resonance, but I imagine it would get boring and I would end up going in circles. Please understand that despite the fact that there is no musical hammering to be found, it all comes down so, so heavily that I feel slimed to the linoleum after two listens.
This grounding does the duty of making space for an airy top-end. It's crackling and alive with cooed vocal harmonies and whistling organ. It's a lovely structure. Much like our Music Video in a Day Series, it's a fun bit of observation to see the masterminds (Dylan May at Running Bodies mostly with the music videos, Sharlene Birdsong with the IN Covers) keep on morphing their respective crafts on these little, reliable nuggets. Keep them coming, that's what I say.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
