You ever hear about what happens when you expose a rodent to radioactive waste? Yeah, that's right, the little guy usually mutates or dies, and if he doesn't die, then the mutations usually make him stronger, like a superhero or a person with a really high tolerance for pain or drugs. And then, if enough of those superhero mutants survive for long enough in the wild (which they tend to do given their powers), the tend to gather in packs and start things like bicycle collectives, or rowing teams, or restaurants. Or, you know, music festival like Bloomington's Mutant Fest this weekend.
With that wind-up behind us, let's talk details. The first seven tracks of this here playlist are dedicated to a slice of the 16 bands that'll play in either the Blockhouse or The Back Door this Saturday in Bloomington as part of Mutant Fest II. As of late last night, there's only a few pre-order tickets left, so grab those for $10 ASAP right here (there'll also be tickets available at the door). It's a wide-ranging scuzzy pick up of a fest, with hot new jammers like Chives playing alongside old-guard faves like The Gizmos. If you're thinking of asking me, "Is it worth it?" don't bother because I'll smack you before your brain has had time to completely interpret my shout of "YES, OBVIOUSLY!"
The last three tracks up in here are assorted selections from the archive that struck my fancy. MIAMI MICE II have been in the news lately, of course, for being too chill to function, and I don't know anything at all about newcomers to the archive New Sordid Underground but from second number one I knew the weird almost new wave-ish sounds coming at me were, if not friendly, then at least welcome. Pantree Owl closes the playlist out because I've got fond memories of being wowed by them back when both they and I were kicking it in Bloomington, and I'm happy to find that I'm still wowed by them in the year of our Lord 2015.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
