Stepping straight out of a faraway, radiantly purple dimension where elaborate headwear and fishnets signify royalty and every living creature is some kind of goddess princess, the lo-fi/sci-fi R&B-psych-haze duo known as Shame Thugs (or $hame Thug$ if you're feeling fancy) are here to smear a little cosmic grease over your eyes and ears to get you ready for whatever you get into tonight (which may very well be seeing Shame Thugs perform live at Sirius Blvck's Light in the Attic release show at The Hi-Fi! Or, you know, maybe another amazing hip hop show in Indianapolis?).
This pair of badass Indianapolis ladies have a brand new video for their synth-fueled space groove, "Galaxy," a track that has quickly elevated the relatively new project to high esteem in Indiana's underground music circles this year. Shame Thugs consistently hit all the sweet spots in modern experimental music: their lo-fi aesthetic allows them to float freely between genres but sidestep rock music almost entirely, subtly incorporating hip hop and pop sounds into their noisy brew, layering effects into a thick cloud that threatens to either devour the listener or completely obscure the performers at any moment.
The video perfectly captures the song's mood, and it is produced and directed by the magnificent Dante Augustus Scarlatti, whose Ameritheism, a political noisecore album released earlier this year, still has our collective brain shitting its little brain-pants here at MFT. Scarlatti's camera work and editing compliment the band's outer space vibe and air of playful mystery, but the director and performers also keep things experimental enough to leave the viewer slightly unsettled. Which means it's completely rational if you watch the video again.
Can't seem to get enough Shame Thugs, friend? Then you're in luck, because they also just uploaded a handful of new tracks from a recent live performance at Bloomington's WFHB community radio station. The set includes previously unreleased songs like the stoney-droney jam, "Baked in the Bakery" and the pulsating soul-tinged singalong, "Everyone Like." You can check out those new recordings right here:
So there ya go. Soak up those vibes, listen to those wild sounds, keep watching that video, and squeeze yourself into The Hi-Fi tonight if you're a crazy motherfucker like me. And, as always, keep on thugging, keep on shaming, and keep on Shame Thugging. Or something, I don't know. Where did that Taylor guy go?
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
