About

Zach Smith is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter armed with an 8-track digital recorder and a head full of trick candles. Based in the Heartland of America, his live performances display a rich eclecticism fitting for the Circle City. From utilizing familiar musical structures to exploring recalcitrant decorum, he actively challenges and develops his style and understanding of composition. Zach's musical style is often redolent of the classic songwriters with a unique, personal twist. His songwriting marries a catchy chorus to an indie perspective, often taking a hard left-turn during the bridges.

Home Recordings

8 songs

Early examples of my music, these songs are the epitome of DIY home recordings. From raw sound clips to experimenting with unique recording settings, this collection captures that Indie Indy feel. Some mistakes are left in the mix to retain what I considered authenticity, and as a slight revolt against the perfected projects we can now achieve using technology (which isn\'t really what music is about to me). In fact, I used a phone to record "Lovely." Everything else, however, was recorded (similarly to my second album) on a Tascam 8-track recorder. Some of the crowd favorites are "Blue Moon"; "Monsters Don\'t Exist"; and "Lovely." I hope you enjoy these examples of potentiality.

The Road So Far

5 songs

The Road So Far is a collection of songs that I wrote and recorded over the time period of a year or so. I consider this time to be a period of growth and testing different writing styles and (in some circumstances) imitating other styles of music to stretch my boundaries. All of the tracks were recorded in my room or at Marian University (they had more instruments, like the piano/marimba/vibraphone/drumset you hear on the instrumental track) where I played and recorded most everything. The exception would be the wonderful drumming done by local artist Andrew Howard on the track titled Misery. During the time of this album, I experienced a lot of growth individually--in addition to addressing some of the existential questions of existence and futility from my (then) point of reference. I hope you enjoy them.
