About

Material Culture was the performance and recording musical name for Justin K Prim from 2004-2006. It started when revel in the morning and ended when Kid Primitive Family began.

Historically, it goes like this:

Once there was a rock band in the town of Muncie, IN that consisted of 5 people. When that rock band broke up, one of the members (Justin [K Prim]) felt a little confused and sad. He felt like he was still in the music making mode and refused to stop, regardless of the current status of his bandmate roomates. Thus, Material Culture was born.

It started with a 5 song EP called Radio Music. This was basically a collection of old ideas for music and lyrics, all assembled together on a laptop. It sounds like electronic drums, acoustic guitars, and an offkilter attempt at signing. One of the songs off the album, Leave and Not Look Back was featured on Woodenman Record's Workman's Comp 3.5.

Then the period began where Hope was created.  I looped and layered sounds in my room, guitars drums, horns, and more.  Songs emerged and I gave them to Jon from Everything, Now!  He wrote the most perfect and beautiful lyrics and we recorded them at the old 525 house.  A month later, everything tweaked and mixed, we released these to friends.  It was beautiful.

Around the same time came a handful of solo shows, involving a looping pedal and sometimes a laptop or sampler. Along the way, another EP was in the process of being created. A tribute to a huge influence, Cap'n Jazz. With the help of longtime friend and drummer, Erick Sherman, a 5 song cover EP emerged.

After all this a few more shows happened, now with the includence of Jon Rogers and sometimes drumsets, bass guitars, accordians, and dual vocals.

Sometime later, another compilation was released focusing on Noise. Included on this comp is a song called Independent Woman, a noisy cover of a song by friend Eric Alexander.

Eventually, Material Culture was put to rest. Justin went on to be the rap star, Kid Primitive and Jon and Erick performed together in Everything, Now! and frequently tour the world.

Hope

11 songs

This album is a collaboration between Jon Rogers and (I) Justin K Prim. I spent a few months layering sounds in my room. I finger-picked electric guitars over and over themselves, while playing with a drum set, trumpets and saxophones, manipulated samples, and some other strange noises from the house. Then I gave it to Jon and he wrote the perfect lyrics and then sang them. In the end, this is a pretty album, folky, but with some really strange stuff going on in the background.

Texas Dance Floor Battle Split

5 songs

Material Culture/Prim Fam: Texas Dancefloor Battle Split.
In a strange transitional period, I remixed three of the songs from “Hope” under my new moniker; Kid Primitive. I emphasized the drums and bass in the tracks, turning them into dance beats. I also recorded two new songs and recorded them acoustically. I didn’t know what to do with all this, so I released it as a split with myself. The death of my old Material Culture project and the birth of the Kid Primitive project.
