Not the Tree - The Current State of MFT

The future of the music in Indiana, Musical Family Tree, the music community is exciting to me for two reasons:

- The primary reason is that I've seen Erin’s leadership and enthusiasm, and I've seen Sean’s (a.k.a. Oreo Jones') passion and enormous efforts. They pave the way for us and others to work hard and care for the music community. I appreciate their actions SO much. I envy their work ethic and drive. We are going to miss Erin's leadership of MFT.

- The other reason is that when I see the artistic energy of musicians in Indianapolis, I am constantly reminded that MFT the organization is not Indiana's Musical Family Tree. It may be a reflection or subset of the actual music community, the tree, but they are not the same thing. It is no secret that MFT is still working toward a sustainable organizational model. That is disappointing. But it is not disheartening when you see that our family tree will grow in almost any situation.

So what is the role of a community organization then?

It is to identify and cultivate the elements that enrich the community, just like sunlight, water, and nutrients are essential to a plant or tree. As an organization, we discover, strategize, implement those elements, while advocating so that the whole enviroment will be more condusive to growth.

During September, there will be three community strategy meetings on Local Original Curation, Industry Knowledge & Skills (Education), and Corporate Patronage.

These strategy sessions are to ask the questions: Are these elements we’ve identified essential enough to be sustainable organizationally and enriching to the music community? If so, what might MFT’s role be in cultivating them?

Community Strategy Sessions

Education (Industry Knowledge & Skills) – Sept 19th at 5:30 p.m.

Local Original Curation – Either Thursday, Sept 21st or Sept. 28th

Corporate Patronage – TBD

These three topics rose to the top when considering both mission and sustainability. However, we are not convinced that these topics are the way to go. It'll be what we make of it.
