With 2017 just into its second month, Musical Family Tree is off to a strong start, bringing the people of Indy some quality live music. While currently hosting events at nearby locations, this Friday head to Fountain Square Brewery for another great show, featuring music from Bloomington’s Darling Recordings.

The evening came about from a conversation with MFT’s Seth Johnson with Wes Cook, lead singer of Hales Corner. According to Darling Recordings founder Nick Faidley, “[Seth] reached out, a couple emails back and forth, and we've got a showcase.” Friday’s event will feature music from three of Darling’s artists, Moor Hound, Stone Irr and of course, Hales Corner.

On Stone Irr, Faidley says, “This Bloomington dreamboat writes powerful and beautiful little songs that he can actually deliver live.” His music is an ethereal blend of guitar and vocals with a pop sensibility. “He'll be playing lots of cuts from his upcoming debut full-length album,” adds Faidley.

Another Darling artist performing Friday is acoustic folk act Moor Hound. “Honestly, Steve [Marino] is a genius songwriter,” says Faidley. “His songs are thoughtful, earnest additions to the American Songbook, and I sincerely hope that everyone checks him out.” A Valentine’s Day gift to us all, Moor Hound’s latest, Green, was released on February 14.

Hales Corner, a four-piece outfit from Bloomington, will finish the night with their self-described dusty sunshine rock. Faidley tells me, “These guys are great. It's rock ‘n’ roll that's not too cute, not self-serious; just genuine.” Expect more from the band in 2017. “I’m very excited to hear how some of their brand new songs sound live. That's right, spoiler alert, they're closing the show with new tunes.”

Either online or at the show, sign up for the Sweetheart Record Club, “a little subscription service Darling runs through Bandcamp.” Faidley elaborates, “The Sweetheart Record Club is $3 a month, and you get our whole back catalog and every new release. We also do some member-only albums every once and a while. For $5 a month, you get all that fun digital stuff plus a cassette tape shipped to you every other month.”

In addition to great music, Darling will have Hales Corner posters and stickers to give out. Plus, new subscribers to the Sweetheart Record Club will get some extras courtesy of Nick Faidley. “If anyone signs up for the Sweetheart Club now or on their phone at the show, I'll give them some free goodies,” he says.

The label is bound to have a fruitful 2017. As previously mentioned, Stone Irr will have a full-length album coming out this year. According to Faidley, “a house record that's finishing up, a massive pop/R&B record from one of the dudes on the FLANCH record, and lots of other things I don't want to spoil. I'm excited. I hope you're excited too.”

This Friday will be a great opportunity to find out more about this Indiana-based label while hearing three talented acts at Fountain Square Brewery. Tickets are only $5, with the show starting at 8 p.m.
