Let’s talk about contrast, shall we? Or rather, how both visually and aurally “Horus Over Cairo” uses contrast in the latest Music Video in a Day. It's brought to Musical Family Tree by Sonny Paradise and GLDMND / Elliot LeMons.
From start to finish, “Horus Over Cairo” balances contrasting elements to create a track that commands the listener’s head to bounce. The sweeping string parts are counteracted by a syncopated, hi-hat heavy beat. Paradise’s rhymes are like a Stewart Copeland drum track, they just want to take off, but are held steady by a solid foundation. His phrasing is solid throughout, pushing the track to its satisfying end.
Visually, LeMons has captured this vibe with striking camerawork. From the panning sky to static shots of religious imagery, the direction perfectly mirrored the track. When the camera is on Paradise, its constant motion made me want to tether my mind to his steady and confident phrasing. It was like staring at my sneakers on the teacup ride at Disney World.
Everything about “Horus Over Cairo” feels current while echoing the best of hip-hop’s history. It’s fresh, while feeling familiar and as I listened to this over and over (and over) it never seemed imbalanced in any way.
