Listen, I don't want to get too real or too honest up in this blogspace, but my weeknights have been SLAMMED lately. Every night last week but for the one on which I drove to Lafayette to play with Sissy Spacek, I spent scrubbing baseboards and listening to someone read Neal Stephenson's crash course on cryptography through a tiny little Bluetooth speaker I bought online. This week's looking a little freer, to be honest, but even so, it felt right in a sort of narcissistic way to limit the shows I rep to only three and to those that are taking place on the weekend.
So: the first one is this Saturday at Indy Hostel. It's the fifth annual Indy Folk Fest. Going out on a limb, I'll say it's probably the single best way to spend all Saturday chilling in the southern reaches of Broad Ripple. With an all local lineup including Bigfoot Yancey, The Midwest Rhythm Exchange, Sphie, and more, as well Upland Beer on tap, food from Karma Kitchen Food Truck, and vendors and artists spread out all over the premises. Last year this fest sold out, so be sure to grab your tickets ahead of time.
Next up and also on Saturday is the Drag Gospel Potluck down in Fountain Square. Featuring The Anointed, Hen, Rachel & Jonny, possible puppeteering by Rebecca Riley, and a coleslaw competition, unless you're chilling like I asked you to up at the Indy Folk Fest, you would do well to hit this one up. I, of course, would do well to use less second person in my writing, but what can [one] do?
Thirdly, on Sunday night you'll find local gross out organ-grinders The Icks popping in and out with touring bands Surgeons in Heat and The Fatty Acids at the Melody Inn. Get there, pal!
Closing out the playlist, we've got some sweet newness from Teen Brigade, Periodic Table Tennis, The Crow Effect, and Stone Irr. Teen Brigade and Periodic Table Tennis have a special place in my heart right now because Dusty from PTT and Greg from TB lived through that Sissy Spacek set I mentioned up top with me last week and I feel like it really brought us together. Slick sounds I've never heard abound from the Crow Effect, and Stone Irr's old band Bikespeed Champion charmed me so aggressively when I saw them play in Bloomington a couple times last spring that I'll ride for pretty much anything the dude puts out--and it turns out this stuff is great.
Special thanks to Smallbox, whose support makes these weekly playlists possible.
Help us spread Indiana music, and we'll give you special rewards as our way of saying "thanks!"
