Preview: !mindparade and Dog Brother at Indy CD & Vinyl on December 6

So, after you're done house partying Friday night at the Kismet with Harry Otaku and pals, I can imagine you're going to be all psyched to shop for some records and see a couple more bands for free on Saturday evening. Fortuitously, I could not have a more perfect event to preview for any and all of you who are feeling precisely that: MFT's monthly in-store at Indy CD & Vinyl is back! This month it features Bloomington's !mindparade and Indianapolis' Dog Brother.

!mindparade I'm hoping you already know a little about, because you're reading the blog right now, and I've got 10 bucks riding on the fact that that means you've read the blog before. What I mean is, not too long ago, I wrote a review of !mindparade's Hero release via Tree Machine records. I talked a big game about bedroom-style psych excursions, and how the widely disparate instrumentation congealed into these focused but twisty, turvy songs that seemed to keep on surprising even themselves structurally.

Will those ridiculous assertions remain true in a live setting? There is truly only one way to find out, and that is to attend this show (did you guess correctly?). And, because the internet is a glorious content delivery machine, you can even hear what the band sounds like ahead of time (totally free of my typographic babbling) via the MFT player embedded below, which contains the entirety of !mindparade's half of Heroes (the release was a split with New Jersey's Vows).

Dog Brother traverse down the rightward path of hazy garage, twinking, occasionally, the nose of yours, mine, and their surf rock idols. That haze, though, on their Phantom Whiskers release comes not from an particular profusion of reverb or delay like you might expect, but rather this sort of EQ shelf that happens in the upper frequencies, lopping off sharpness and making that much more space for a bloomy lower end.

The band springboards around within that low-end with a lightning-quick agility, propelled in large part by the drum patterns, that, instead of hopping in the back seat to prop everything up, climb up front with mom and dad and go one for one with the guitar's loose riffing. Peep, for example, how the drums draw underline after underline beneath the chiming guitar on "Nero." Skittering hats and cymbal bells infuse with the interlock of bass and guitar to make for something that furiously roils even though at first it feels like nothing but a soft breeze coming in the window. It's all about riding that slick, slick line of internal contrast, man.

As ever, the event is totally free, all ages, kicks off at 7pm, and will be done by 9pm. "Gosh, Taylor, I don't know, is there anything else you can do to convince me?" Sure, sure, how about a link to the recordings we (viz. Justin Shimp of BrainTwins and myself) have done of past iterations of these shows. Is that enough for you? It better be.
