Based in Indianapolis, the group formed shortly before midnight on December 31, 1989 and played more or less constantly throughout Indiana for the next five years, making occasional forays into Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio. Every dollar the band ever made went towards recording, and the Lovemeknots eventually released three full-length discs: Gary?s Dog (1992), Full Tilt (1994), and Setting Noises (1995). The band also released Home Tonight (a three-song vinyl single) in 1993, and contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the locally-produced movie Love Handles (1994). Self-described as a ?noisy pop? band, a typical Knots set saw the group wobbling its way from straight-ahead power pop, to feedback-soaked riff rock, to quiet ballad, to extended, contemplative droning. The band eventually called it quits in 1995, when Kyle Barnett left town to further his education. He and his wife, Lisa, now play in the Austin band Hitchhike. David Magee plays bass in local powerhouse Phyllis, and Brad Shelor plays guitar in Vinyl Shriner every once in a blue moon.
The Lovemeknots were Kyle Barnett (guitar, vocals), Evan Finch (guitar, vocals), Brad Shelor (guitar) and Rich Meyer (drums). Original bass player Greg Dyken left the band in 1993, and was subsequently replaced by David Magee.
